An Iowa City man was arrested after allegedly being found with a forged check at the Johnson County Jail.

Police say the incident occurred April 25th. 56-year-old Jeffrey Chapman of the Quarters Apartments on Highway 6 East was  incarcerated on a 4th degree Theft charge and was allegedly found to be in possession of four checks by Jail staff.  One of the checks was reportedly made out to Chapman and endorsed by him.

A Deputy talked to the owner of the check, and she stated the checks were missing, she didn’t know Chapman, and didn’t write a check out to him.

A warrant was issued on Sunday for Chapman’s arrest; he was picked up Tuesday and could be sentenced to up to five years in prison if convicted on the Forgery charge.  He remains in the Johnson County Jail as of Wednesday morning on $5000 bond.
