The vacant lot at 21 South Linn Street finally has a future.
The Press-Citizen reports the city council voted Tuesday to move forward with North Liberty-based Grand Rail Development’s proposal for the property.
The six-story, $21.5 million building will have two levels of housing with a total of 20 units. Four units would be dedicated to affordable housing, but developers say they will be flexible in allocating property space, including additional floors dedicated to offices or housing.
The 6300 square foot ground floor would include additional performance and stage space for the Englert Theatre. Other commercial space will be available for proposed tenants including ACT, the City of Iowa City, and the Stories Project, a literary museum.
The development team is requesting to buy the Linn Street property for $3 million, about $1.5 million less than what the city paid.
