A local transient wanted for allegedly violating terms of his pre-trial release in a felony assault case has been taken back into custody.
29-year-old Darnell Lewis was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 8:00 Saturday morning. Lewis is accused of assaulting another person at Shelter House on Southgate Avenue in February. The two were engaged in a fight when Lewis reportedly knocked the other person unconscious, then continued kicking them in the head. Lewis was charged with Willful Injury Causing Bodily Injury. If convicted, he faces a maximum of five years in prison.
Lewis was released from the Johnson County Jail pending a case management conference on June 9th, but Judge Deborah Minot issued a warrant for his arrest on April 23rd after he reportedly assaulted another patron at the Agapé Café in Old Brick on East Market Street on April 19th. Lewis faces a charge of Assault Causing Bodily Injury for that incident, which could lead to a sentence of up to one year in jail if he’s convicted.
