Two people have been arrested after a downtown Iowa City bar fight that saw the reported assault of a police officer.

Iowa City Police were called to a fight in progress at the Sports Column on South Dubuque Street just before 1:30 Friday morning. Arrest reports indicate 25-year-old Demarco Johnson of Cedar Rapids was fighting with other individuals. When an officer tried to break up the altercation, Johnson allegedly grabbed him with one arm and swung around to punch him with the other. Police say once Johnson was detained and told to sit on the ground, he kept trying to stand up and had to be held down by an officer.

A second suspect in the fight, 23-year-old Quiron Walker of Coralville, allegedly had to be pulled off another participant and kept away from the fracas as he kept trying to re-engage. A small bag of Exotic Strawberriez marijuana and rolling papers were allegedly found in Walker’s pocket.

Johnson is charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, Interference With Official Acts, and Disorderly Conduct. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 14 months in jail. Walker faces up to 15 months behind bars if convicted on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Disorderly Conduct, and Interference With Official Acts.
