The Musician’s Pro Shop location in Burlington sustained major fire damage yesterday.

According to a release from the Burlington Fire Department, the building is a 4800 square foot, 2-store structure with an attached 1-story storage building.  Crews were dispatched to the structure at 800 Maple Street at 4:35pm.

The business was occupied at the time of the fire; all patrons made it out safely.  Joel Kipp, co-owner of the business with his wife Patricia, and a Des Moines Country Sheriff’s deputy initially attempted to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher.

Arriving firefighters located flames along the rear of the storage building.  They made an initial offensive attack, but due to structural failure of the roof, crews transitioned to a defensive attack.

The Fire Department says there were no working smoke alarms located in the structure.

The two-story portion of the structure sustained smoke and water damage; the one-story storage building is a total loss. The masonry structure was built in 1868.

It was determined that the fire started within combustible materials located against the exterior of the building. Cause of the fire has been ruled undetermined and not considered suspicious.

Musician’s Pro Shop has an Iowa City location on South Gilbert Street.
