The Iowa City Police Department has released its annual report for 2024, showing a decrease in gun and drug-related crimes, but an increase in shoplifting.
The report says gun violence is among its highest priorities. Shootings dropped by over 50 percent, from 15 to 7; rounds fired dropped from a high in 2020 of 304 to just 35 in 2024.
There was one gun-related homicide in 2024, when Christine Blount was shot and killed on the 600 block of South Dodge Street Decmber 30th.
The most prevalent crime committed in the city last year was simple assault with 776 arrests. Impersonation had the biggest percentage increase, going from 88 incidents in 2023 to 117 last year. That’s an increase of 33 percent.
