A transient accused of a stabbing on the Ped Mall last summer has been sentenced to five years in prison.
Iowa City Police say the victim was following 34-year-old Sean Christopher along the 200 block of East College Street when an altercation ensued. Christopher allegedly produced a knife from his bag and stabbed the other subject in the stomach.
Christopher then walked eastbound through the Iowa City Public Library and continued down the 300 block of East College Street where he was pointed out to arriving officers. A knife consistent with the stab wound was found in his bag.
The incident was captured on security video. Police say the wound was deep enough that it required surgery.
Christopher was charged with Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury and Going Armed With Intent. If convicted on both charges, he would have faced a maximum of 15 years in prison.
Online records show Christopher pleaded guilty to a charge of Assault Causing Serious Injury and was sentenced to five years behind bars. The other charges were dismissed.
Christopher has a history of threatening others with weapons including a knife, a stick, and a meat cleaver.
