A Coralville man was arrested after an investigation reportedly identified him as the person who stole items from an Iowa City parking ramp.
According to police, 36-year-old Robert Gatewood of 5th Street was captured on security cameras entering a restricted area of the Harrison Street Parking Ramp at approximately 2:30am on April 21st. Footage reportedly showed Gatewood taking multiple items from the area and leaving. The value of the items was determined to be approximately $1000.
A warrant for Gatewood’s arrest was issued on Thursday, and Iowa City Police found him asleep at the intersection of Gilbert Street and Kirkwood Avenue at 10:10pm that night. He was woken up and reportedly had bloodshot watery eyes, unsteady balance, and slurred speech.
Gatewood was charged with 3rd degree Theft and Trespass for the April 21st incident, as well as Public Intoxication. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to up to 13 months in jail.
Gatewood already faces jail time after getting charged with 3rd or Subsequent OWI and Driving While Revoked charges from an alleged incident on March 14th; he was also charged with a probation violation on May 1st. He has pleaded not guilty and has a case management conference scheduled for June 30th.
