The City of Coralville has decided to put a pause on a planned sports complex upgrade after bids came in higher than expected.
The Press-Citizen reports Phase Three of the Coralville Youth Sports Complex project was expected to relocate the baseball field in S.T. Morrison Park, making way for the city’s new recreation center. The project also would add two new ball fields into the youth sports area, complete with dugouts, a new sidewalk and restrooms. The additions would give the complex a total of seven fields.
Initial estimates put the project at less than $1.5 million; bids from three different companies exceeded $1.8 million. The bids were rejected at the Coralville City Council meeting earlier this week. The contractors bids required a quick turnaround due to their busy schedule.
Parks and Recreation Director Sherri Proud said the city is considering splitting the project into two parts, which contractors say would result in more accurate bids. They hope to put the project out for bids again either late this summer or in the fall, in order to give contractors time to have the project completed by September 2026.
