A North Liberty man faces numerous charges after a traffic stop found him with a fake ID, beer and drugs in his vehicle.

Police stopped 19-year-old Maddux Johnson of Leann Circle on South Dubuque Street in Iowa City just after 8:45am Thursday because he was not wearing a seatbelt while behind the wheel of a 2018 Nissan Altima. The officer reported the immediate smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

Johnson allegedly told police he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt because he had a cough. He also reportedly admitted to smoking marijuana in his vehicle the day prior, and had the drug on him and in the vehicle. He also allegedly admitted to drinking the night before.

A probable cause search was conducted, and reportedly discovered several marijuana and THC items, psychedelic mushrooms, and items of drug paraphernalia.  Several cases of beer were also found, and Johnson allegedly was carrying a fake ID making him seem to be of legal drinking age.

After showing measurable impairment on field tests, Johnson submitted to a PBT showing a breath-alcohol level over the legal limit.

Johnson was charged with two controlled substance violations, OWI first offense, Possession of a Fictitious ID, and possession of drug paraphernalia.  If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to a prison sentence of up to over four years.
