A fire that started overnight in Oelwein destroyed three homes.
Police and firefighters were called to the 300 block of 1st Avenue NE just after 2am on reports of a house fully engulfed in flames. Nearby residences were evacuated as the fire began to spread.
Firefighters said the first home was already nearly destroyed by fire upon arrival. Homes to the south and west that also caught fire were also considered total losses.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
