A construction worker who helped build the new University of Iowa Health Care North Liberty campus is now accused of stealing and re-selling tens of thousands of dollars in medical and construction equipment from the site during the five months he worked there.
56-year-old Kevin Grimm of Tiffin was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 12:15 Tuesday afternoon. University of Iowa Police say Grimm was helping build the new Forevergreen Road facility between January and May of this year when he reportedly stole an estimated $60,000 in equipment and other items and sold them on EBay and Facebook Marketplace. Grimm has an excellent seller rating and allegedly advertised hundreds of stolen items as “new”, selling them at a significant discount.
Among the stolen items were five class two medical devices that can only be legally possessed by FDA-certified physicians, someone being directly supervised by such a physician, or with a prescription from such a physician.
Grimm is charged with one count each of Ongoing Criminal Conduct and 1st Degree Theft, and five counts of Prohibited Acts. If convicted on all charges, he could be sentenced to up to 40 years in prison.
