Governor Kim Reynolds signed a piece of legislation into law this week that would require public schools to accept private school students into their sports programs.

The Des Moines Register reports House File 189 grants private school students mandatory access to participate in public schools’ sports programs if the student lives within the district or in a contiguous school district and if the private school has not offered that sport for the two previous years.

Additionally, public schools cannot charge private school athletes fees that exceed those paid by the public school athletes.

Democrats in the Iowa Legislature criticized the bill, saying it gives the private school students even more access to public school taxpayer dollars, on top of the Education Savings Account law Reynolds enacted in 2023.
