An Iowa City man recently convicted of two OWI’s was charged with his third offense Sunday morning.
A sheriff’s deputy was called to the area of Sioux Avenue at 7:10am on reports of a single vehicle accident, with the 2008 Chevy Trailblazer on its side. Another deputy made contact with the driver on Sand Road while they were en route to the scene. He was identified as 23-year-old Shawn Sharp of Friendship Street.
It was determined that Sharp had been in multiple ditches prior to the vehicle landing on its side. Upon contact, he reportedly had watery eyes, slurred speech, and the odor of alcohol on his breath. He also allegedly had ripped pants, was covered in sweat, and his boots were wet and muddy.
Sharp’s phone was located in the vehicle, and after showing impairment on field tests provided a Datamaster test showing his breath-alcohol level at .151 percent.
A check of Sharp’s driving record showed that in May, he was convicted of two OWIs from incidents on September 2nd and October 22nd 2024. He was charged with his third offense, a Class D felony. He also faces Driving while revoked and failure to maintain control charges. If convicted on all counts, Sharp could be sentenced to up to six years in prison.
He was given a two day jail sentence and fines totaling $2500 when sentenced last month.
