A Waterloo man was taken into custody early Tuesday after a traffic stop led to the discovery of cocaine.
Police stopped the driver of a 2013 Jeep Compass at around 1am as it was traveling northbound on I380 near the 1.4 mile marker. The state trooper was explaining the reason for the stop when he detected the odor of marijuana. The passenger, identified as 31-year-old Tremane Meakens of Grant Avenue, was allegedly holding a black plastic bag between his legs. When asked what was in the bag, Meakens reportedly became visibly nervous, as he started to shake and stutter when talking.
Meakens originally stated that the contents of the bag was just trash, but would not show the trooper anything further. He was then asked to step out of the vehicle. Meakens then said he would tell the trooper what he thought was in the bag, stating he thought it was cocaine.
A probable cause search allowed the trooper to open the bag, where he reportedly found another bag filled with a white powdery substance consistent with cocaine. The evidence was sent to the DCI lab for positive identification.
Meakens was charged with a controlled substance violation and Failure to Affix Drug Stamp. If convicted on both counts, he could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.
