A Marion man allegedly reached speeds of up to 177 miles per hour during a Wednesday night pursuit.
The Cedar Rapids Police Department reports that 19-year-old Kyle Ward was doing dangerous stunts on his motorcycle on Highway 100 while being videoed by someone in a pickup truck. An officer attempted a stop on Ward and the pickup. The truck stopped, but Ward allegedly attempted to elude officers and led them on a chase.
The officers were unable to follow Ward for the entirety of the chase, but contacted the Iowa State Patrol, who were patrolling in an airplane. They kept tabs on Ward, and clocked him going 177 miles per hour during the chase.
Officers apprehended Ward in a parking lot at 18th Street and 76th Avenue SW. He was charged with felony eluding, careless driving, speeding, disobeying a traffic control device, improper passing, failure to display registration plate, and improper tires. He is currently being held in the Linn County Jail on a $7000 bond.
The State Patrol said Ward’s speed ops the highest speed recorded in Iowa by the Iowa State Patrol in 2024, which was 164 mph in January 2024.
