The mother of a Coralville shooting victim is accused of breaking into the mobile home where he was killed.

Coralville Police say 56-year-old Carrie Latham of the Western Hills Estates manufactured housing community broke into a neighbors’ residence just before 7:30 on Friday night. The trailer was the site where Latham’s son, 27-year-old Mason Edwards, was shot twice and killed last Wednesday night. That incident remains under investigation.

Arriving Coralville Police say they witnessed Latham leaving the trailer after a reported burglary. Officers say she showed signs of intoxication and had a fresh cut on her forearm consistent with breaking out a window. Latham was arrested and, after allegedly threatening to kill the arresting officers, charged with 3rd Degree Burglary, 1st Degree Harassment, 5th Degree Criminal Mischief, and Public Intoxication. If convicted on all counts, she faces a maximum of over seven years in prison.

Latham also had a previous warrant for her arrest after skipping a June 9th court date on a charge of 2nd Offense Domestic Abuse Assault. That charge stems from a March incident where she was accused of throwing a bottle of alcohol, a lava lamp and cat food at her daughter and the daughter’s father.

Edwards had a criminal history of his own. He was accused of shooting another individual at Western Hills in June of 2018. The Attempted Murder, Going Armed with Intent, and Carrying Weapons charges from that incident no longer appear on the Iowa Courts website.

Edwards also had previous convictions for Assault While Displaying a Weapon in August of 2018, as well as Assault Causing Bodily Injury and 1st Degree Harassment convictions in March of 2019.

At the time of his death, Edwards had also been facing active charges of Assault While Displaying a Weapon, Assault Causing Bodily Injury, 3rd Degree Criminal Mischief, 4th Degree Criminal Mischief, and Public Intoxication relating to an incident in Linn County in May.
