A downtown pedestrian was reportedly assaulted after he tried to protect his son from a transient.
27-year-old Montelle Craig was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 10:15 Monday night.
Iowa City Police say a man was in the Ped Mall with his child at 8:00 last Saturday night when Craig began encroaching on their personal space. When the man told Craig to walk away, Craig allegedly head-butted him. The man slapped Craig, who then reportedly grabbed the man’s arm and punched him several times in the face while he was on the ground.
Craig, who lists his home address as Shelter House, is now charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury, Possession of a Controlled Substance – 3rd or Subsequent Offense, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. If convicted on all counts, he faces a maximum of over three years in jail.
The drug charges stem from a baggie of marijuana and a marijuana pipe that were found on Craig’s person when he was taken into custody near the intersection of Linn and Washington Streets around 8:00 Monday night.
