The Mercer Park Aquatic Center pool will be closed for a few weeks this summer while workers replace the building’s roof.

The Iowa City City Council was informed that the current roof has reached the end of its serviceable life and will be completely torn off.

The Press-Citizen reports bidding is expected to begin July 1 with a contract awarded a week later. Staff estimates that the pool would only be closed for a couple of weeks. They also said the pool would be refilled by September to coincide with the high school swimming season.

All work is expected to be completed over the subsequent two months, with a completion date estimated for Sept. 12.

During the closure, that would leave the Robert A Lee Rec Center pool as the only open facility in Iowa City. The Coralville Aquatic Center’s indoor pool is open during regular hours, and the outdoor pool will remain open through August 20th.
