The State Historical Society of Iowa will be closing the Centennial Building in Iowa City, and move its archives to Des Moines.

The Press-Citizen reports the facility will close June 30, 2026. The historical society cites ongoing financial considerations and its duplicative functions.

The Centennial Building was the product of a joint project between the University of Iowa and the State Historical Society of Iowa. Between the Iowa City location on Iowa Avenue and the Des Moines facility, over 200 million records, photos, books and other artifacts are stored.

Governor Reynolds approved a $5 million remodel of the State Historical Building in Des Moines to revamp the storage shelving units to accommodate the incoming materials from Iowa City.

The Centennial Building Research Center will be accessible by appointment only Wednesdays through Fridays starting July 9th through the end of the year.
