An Iowa City man was taken into custody after an investigation found he was in possession of a stolen firearm.

A search warrant was obtained after 39-year-old Donald Anderson of Wayne Avenue was allegedly seen on video footage walking outside of his residence with a handgun.  On April 17th, a stolen firearm was reportedly recovered inside Anderson’s residence.  Anderson, a convicted felon, allegedly admitted to finding the firearm, taking possession of it and storing it inside his home.

Anderson reportedly also had marijuana in his shorts pocket and his coat jacket.

A warrant for his arrest was issued, and Anderson remained at large until Monday night, when officers detained him near the intersection of Wayne Avenue and Wade Street. He allegedly began to walk backwards and extended both his arms to avoid being handcuffed. Anderson was also found a package of marijuana in his bag.

Charges include Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a felon, Trafficking in Stolen Weapons, 4th degree Theft, and Marijuana possession for the April incident, and Interference with Official Acts and Marijuana Possession for the arrest incident. If convicted on all counts, Anderson could be sentenced to over 13 years in prison.
