An Iowa City man was taken into custody Thursday night after allegedly assaulting the mother of his shared children and driving under the influence.
The incident occurred at 8:25pm when officers were called to Cross Park Place on reports of a man beating up a woman in the parking lot. The man then left in a Ford Escape but was located by police.
The driver, 22-year-old Carl Marshall of South Dubuque Street, got out of the vehicle and opened the back door. Inside was an infant who had fallen out of their car seat due to it flipping over and the baby was face down on the back seat, crying.
Marshall allegedly had bloodshot watery eyes, and had the odor of ingested alcohol. He showed measurable impairment on field sobriety tests and refused chemical testing. He reportedly resisted arrest and had to be pushed into a patrol car. He also allegedly kicked at an officer.
Marshall was charged with first offense OWI, Child Endangerment, Interference with Official Acts, Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, and 2nd offense Domestic Assault. He could be sentenced to over five years in prison if convicted on all counts.
