An Iowa City man is set to spend up to a decade behind bars after his conviction on charges he sexually abused a minor.

According to a news release from the Johnson County Attorney’s Office, 29-year-old Gael Ewawa Mpia was sentenced on Monday to up to ten years in prison for Enticing a Minor Under 16 for Sexual Purposes and 3rd Degree Sexual Abuse. An investigation determined that in March of 2024 Mpia enticed two juvenile females to a residence and had sexual intercourse with one of them, then attempted to prevent the two from leaving. That led to Iowa City Police being called to the altercation near the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Newton Road, where Mpia was arrested.

Mpia was sentenced to prison terms of ten and five years, which Judge Elizabeth Dupuich ordered to run concurrently. The two sentences will run consecutively to a five-year sentence Mpia has been ordered to serve for a separate incident of Enticing a Minor Under 16 in 2024 when he allegedly tried to pick up a teenage girl at the Old Capitol Town Center.

Two counts of False Imprisonment and one count of 2nd Degree Sexual Abuse were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.
