An Iowa City transient has been formally charged for his involvement in the theft of a scooter from the University of Iowa campus earlier this month.
The victim stated that they locked their Segway GoPro3 scooter to the bike rack outside Shaffer Hall but when they returned both the bike and the lock had been stolen.
Surveillance video showed a white male riding the scooter on Washington Street at approximately 2:50am June 17th. The male, later identified as Dustin WImer, was later seen folding and concealing the scooter near the main library, joined by a black male. Both were seen heading south past the Stanley Museum of Art.
The second suspect was identified as 46-year-old area transient Yahya Karim. Wimer, under Miranda, admitted to stealing the scooter with Karim’s assistance, and stated that Karim later took the scooter without consent.
A warrant was issued for Wimer’s arrest; he was located early Sunday morning on the 1200 block of South Gilbert Street. A search incident to arrest reportedly turned up a glass pipe with burnt residue used for smoking meth, and a silicone straw typically used for snorting drugs.
WImer was charged with 4th degree theft and possession of drug paraphernalia. He faces a jail sentence of up to 13 months if convicted on both counts.
