Iowa House Minority leader Brian Meyer says Iowa should be returned to its first-in-the-nation status in the upcoming 2028 general election.

Meyer, appearing on Iowa Press on PBS Friday said he will continue to push for the state to reclaim their spot at the front of the calendar. National Democrats removed Iowa from the leadoff spot after issues with the 2020 Iowa Caucuses caused by online reporting issues.

New Hampshire, which was also demoted after then-president Joe Biden gave the first spot to South Carolina, held their own unsanctioned primary in January. After holding a party-run primary in April, all their delegates were seated at the Democratic National Convention.

In Iowa, Democrats changed it to an absentee mail-in primary, with results announced on Super Tuesday. Participation was reported as low.

The Des Moines Register reports Meyer has yet to reach out to other state party leaders to discuss the possibility of holding the caucuses ahead of other states in 2028.
