West Liberty residents are rallying around a 20-year-old who was taken into the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Father Guillermo Treviño Jr. posted to his Facebook account on Tuesday that his godson, 20-year-old Pascual Pedro-Pedro of West Liberty, made his annual ICE check-in in Cedar Rapids when federal agents took him into custody. Treviño claims in the post that many ICE cases are being denied, and once they are, ICE agents immediately consider the person in question as undocumented and take them into custody.

Local immigrant rights group Escucha Mi Voz Iowa posted to its Facebook page that more than 75 West Liberty residents gathered at the Muscatine County Jail Tuesday night for a prayer vigil. Speakers argued that Pedro-Pedro is an important member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church family, has no criminal record, and is a respected student and athlete.

A post on Treviño’s Facebook page includes a script for those who wish to call ICE and demand Pedro-Pedro’s immediate release.
