A Coralville man has been given a deferred judgment for an assault that left the victim disfigured.
Last September, 21-year-old Kalvin Mendieta of the Western Hills Estates manufactured housing community was outside the Sports Column on South Dubuque Street when he engaged in a verbal confrontation with another man. The argument escalated, and Mendieta allegedly hit the man in the face twice. The man fell backward and cracked his head open on a metal railing, rendering him unconscious. The arrest report indicated the man sustained injuries to his face and the back of his head that will cause permanent disfigurement.
The altercation was caught on camera, and several people witnessed the attack.
Mendietta was charged with Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury, Disorderly Conduct, and Possession of a Fictitious ID. If convicted on those charges, he could have been sentenced to over 11 years in prison.
Earlier this week…as part of a plea deal..Judge Elizabeth Dupuich gave Mendietta a deferred judgment on the Willful Injury charge and dismissed all other counts.
