Allegedly making a “sexual” gesture toward a police officer has led to an assault charge against an Iowa City man.
According to arrest records, uniformed Iowa City Police officers were patrolling the Ped Mall outside Brother’s just before 2:15 Saturday morning when 23-year-old Lonnie Smith of Scott Park Drive walked behind a female officer and began “dancing inappropriately”. The officer turned around and asked Smith what he was doing, and he allegedly replied that he didn’t know what she was talking about. Police say Smith showed signs of intoxication and refused breath testing.
City of Iowa City surveillance video reportedly shows Smith come within inches of the officer’s back and begin thrusting his hips toward her buttocks in what is described as “an offensive and sexual nature”.
Smith is charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations and Public Intoxication. If convicted on both counts, he faces a maximum of 13 months in jail.
