An Iowa City man has been arrested after an investigation alleged that he made a series of sports card purchases, defrauding the store by scanning lower-priced cards.
The incidents occurred at the Coralville Walmart on Commerce Drive. According to police, 47-year-old Stanley Szeto of Sandusky Drive was seen on closed circuit TV footage taking a separate UPC barcode from a lower-priced pack of sports cards and used it to cover the real barcode of higher valued sports cards, paying a fraction of the cards’ actual value. The scheme was reportedly executed on February 28th, March 19th, and April 6th, 11th and 25th of this year. The total amount of cards taken without payment exceeded $1650.
A warrant was issued for Szeto’s arrest May 30th. He was served on Monday and charged with 2nd degree theft, a Class D felony punishable by a prison term of up to five years if convicted. He was released on his own recognizance pending arraignment.
