An Iowa City man faces a long prison term after an alleged assault on a woman Tuesday night.

According to the arrest report, 38-year-old Johnny Garrett of South Dubuque Street waited for the victim to get home from work, and started a verbal altercation.  The woman tried to walk away from the situation, but Garrett allegedly pulled out a firearm, cocked it, and pointed it at the victim with intent to intimidate her.

Garrett left her residence, reportedly went to a gas station, and returned shortly afterwards.  At the residence, he allegedly pushed the woman to the ground and got on top of her.  The woman tried to pull out her phone to call for help, but Garrett reportedly took it from her. He then allegedly punched and kicked her in the face and body several times, leaving injuries. Garrett also reportedly slammed her head against the floor multiple times.

The woman attempted to yell for help, but Garret covered her mouth and reportedly told her that he’d kill her if she tried to get help. She then tried to call 911  using her Apple watch, but Garrett allegedly snatched it off her wrist, causing a further injury.

Upon arrival, police were unable to find the phone or the watch.  A firearm was reportedly discovered near the residence, covered by some rocks.

Garrett allegedly had bloodshot watery eyes and had the odor of ingested alcohol. He reportedly admitted to pointing the firearm at the woman, and to being intoxicated.  He refused to submit to a breath sample.

A check of Garrett’s criminal record showed a felony conviction out of Cook County Illinois, and a deferred judgement domestic abuse conviction with an active no-contact order.

He has been charged with Domestic Abuse Assault with Display of a Weapon; Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury; Dominion or Control of a Firearm by a Felon; Dominion or Control of a Firearm by a Domestic Abuser; Person Ineligible to Carry Dangerous Weapons; 2nd degree Robbery; Obstruction of Emergency Communications; and 1st degree Harassment. If convicted on all counts, Garrett could be sentenced to a maximum sentence of over 26 years in prison.
