Iowa City man involved with theft of scooter from UI campus last month charged with harassment

An Iowa City man who was allegedly involved in the theft of a scooter from the University of Iowa campus last month has now been charged with threatening a woman.

46-year-old Yahya Karim, who lists his address as Shelter House on Southgate Avenue, allegedly sexually assaulted a woman. While doing so, he reportedly threatened to stab her with a knife that he had in his possession.  He also allegedly told the victim that if she attempted to contact law enforcement, he would kill her.

Karim was taken into custody and charged with 1st degree Harassment, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by  a jail term of up to two years if convicted. A no-contact order was requested between the two parties.

On June 17th, Karim and another man allegedy stole a locked scooter from a bike rack at Schafer Hall in the overnight hours.  The other man, Jason WImer, reportedly told police that after they stashed the scooter near the main library, Karim took the scooter without permission. When arrested on a 4th degree Theft charge, he was reportedly found with drug paraphernalia. Those charges could add up to 13 months to his sentence if convicted.
