The suspect in an Iowa City convenience store burglary and assault has reached a plea deal.
25-year-old Antavis D.W. Watson is accused of attacking a clerk at the Muscatine Avenue Kum & Go just after 8:00 on the night of February 2nd. Police say Watson was trying to buy alcohol when he got into an argument with the clerk, who threatened to call the police. That led to Watson allegedly going behind the counter and punching the clerk twice in the face, causing an open, bleeding wound.
Watson was apprehended on the night of May 24th after police found him outside a residence on 5th Avenue in Coralville. Watson, who lists home addresses on both 5th Street in Coralville and Lakeside Drive in Iowa City, reportedly attempted to run, but he was eventually tasered and taken into custody.
Watson was initially charged with 1st Degree Burglary, Assault Causing Bodily Injury, and Interference With Official Acts. If convicted on all counts, he would have faced a maximum of over 26 years in prison.
Iowa Courts Online now lists the charges as Assault Causing Bodily Injury and Trespassing Causing Injury, which carry a maximum total sentence of two years in jail.
A sentencing date is not listed in online records.
