A Cedar Rapids man was charged with his first OWI early Tuesday as he was heading home from Iowa City.

A State Trooper observed 20-year-old Ryan Jennings of 6th Street SE driving a Ford Fusion northbound on I380 at the 6 mile marker, weaving from line to line within his lane. The vehicle’s taillights weren’t functional, and Jennings reportedly hit the concrete barrier with the passenger side of his vehicle, causing the rear tire to go flat.

Upon contact, an odor of ingested alcohol was allegedly observed. Jennings stated that he was heading home from work in Iowa City and had two shots of alcohol earlier in the night.  Field sobriety tests showed signs of impairment, and a PBT reportedly showed his breath-alcohol level at .191 percent.  A subsequent Datamaster had a reading of .183 percent.

Jennings allegedly later admitted that he had five shots of Jamieson whiskey rather than the two he previously stated.

He was charged with OWI first offense, a serious misdemeanor.
