The Johnson County Board of Supervisors unanimously agreed Wednesday to advance a resolution on human rights, referred by the Trans Advisory Committee.
Among the bullet points of the resolution is a reaffirmation of commitment to equal protection and freedom from discrimination on the basis of sex, including ensuring LGBTQ+ individuals are free from discrimination, whether by individuals, businesses, or government actors.
The resolution also calls upon other elected leaders in the county to use their authority to protect LGBTQ+ individuals, and the County Attorney to engage in current or future litigation to protect their rights.
The Supervisors say if a local state or federal law results in the reduction of an LGBTQ+ individual’s rights, they would confer with the County Attorney to determine if compliance is consistent with the 14th Amendment, which addresses citizenship, due process, and equal protection under the law.
Supervisor Chairperson Jon Green posted the full resolution on Facebook and encouraged residents to read it in full. He called it “a tremendous document in a time of encroaching dread.” Green said recent legislative actions on the state and federal level have “tasked the most vulnerable, the most persecuted, our smallest minority, to argue for their own humanity, dignity and rights.”
The full resolution is included in the agenda for Wednesday’s work session below.
