An area transient was taken into custody after allegedly driving drunk with someone else’s vehicle and causing a hit-and-run accident.

According to police, 46-year-old Michael Medhust was a suspect in the accident, as the vehicle he was driving matched the description of the vehicle involved.  He allegedly ran a red light without stopping and was swerving in his lane. Medhurst reportedly lost his balance and nearly fell out of the vehicle when stopped.  Police say he had bloodshot watery eyes, slurred confused speech, impaired balance, and the odor of consumed alcohol.

Medhurst allegedly admitted to drinking and being drunk, but refused a PBT and Datamaster.

He was reportedly unable to provide any owner information about the silver Toyota he was driving. The owner was contacted, and they said they kept the keys above the visor and nobody had been given permission to drive the vehicle.

Medhurst had no explanation why he was driving the Toyota.

He was taken into custody and charged with first offense OWI and Operating a Vehicle without Owner’s consent.  If convicted on both charges, he faces a prison sentence of up to three years.
