A teenager who was involved in a large fight outside an Iowa City bar in 2023 and reportedly stabbed three people has pleaded to lesser charges.
Christopher Torres of Iowa City was 17 at the time of the incident; he was charged with three felony counts of willful injury, and reached a deal with prosecutors where he pleaded to three charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and unlawful assembly, all aggravated misdemeanors.
Police say Torres was one of about 10 or more people involved in the fight outside Bardot just before 2am on May 6th 2023. He had a knife and reportedly stabbed three people. One victim had a slash across his face and abdomen and stab wounds in his armpit and back. The second victim was stabbed in the torso, armpit, neck and back, which chipped off a piece of his spine. The third victim was stabbed in the armpit and back. All three stabbing victims were taken to the hospital.
The now 19-year-old could be sentenced to up to six years in prison. However, prosecutors say they’ll recommend running the sentences consecutively but suspending them for probation.
The Gazette reports two other men, now 30-year-old Victor Torres Molina and now 23-year-old Lake Newton, both of West Liberty, also were convicted in the stabbing incident. Both reached plea deals and were granted probation and deferred judgments.
