Fire has closed a Cedar Rapids fast food restaurant until further notice.

Cedar Rapids firefighters were called to the 33rd Avenue SW Burger King, just off Interstate 380, for a grease fire just before 2:30 Saturday afternoon. Arriving crews found smoke coming from the roof of the building, which had already been evacuated. Hose lines were deployed, and crews found a large grease fire around the deep fryer. Dry chemical extinguishers and water were used to extinguish the blaze. The fire extended to the vent hood, which was dismantled so firefighters could extinguish the rest of the conflagration.

It was determined that the fire was unintentional and started when oil ignited during the transfer and cleaning process. There were no injuries to staff or restaurant patrons.

The 33rd Avenue Burger King will remain closed for an undetermined amount of time for repairs, cleaning, and inspection.
