A Cedar Rapids man on probation for two felony charges who allegedly assaulted the mother of his young child was reportedly found with marijuana when arrested.
The assault incident reportedly occurred July 8th. 34-year-old Tahmir Allen of 12th Avenue SW began arguing with the woman at a residence in North Liberty that night. The woman and another witness told police that he pulled out a gun during the argument. He also reportedly threw a large heavy car jack at the victim, striking her in the right forearm.
Allen had left the scene after the woman called 911. During a subsequent phone call. He told police that he was at the scene and ran when they were called, but denied assaulting the woman. Allen has at least two previous domestic abuse convictions out of Johnson County.
A warrant was requested and granted July 17th. It referenced two felony convictions from incidents in January 2021 and March 2022 that he was serving probation on, and cited the domestic assault as a violation of that probation.
Police located Allen, who also lists a Coralville address, on Wayne Avenue in Iowa City Saturday night and arrested him as he was getting into a vehicle. He allegedly had the odor of marijuana coming from the car, and a probable cause search reportedly found a blunt inside.
Allen faces new charges of 3rd or subsequent Domestic Abuse Assault and Marijuana possession. He could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison if convicted on both counts. Allen faces additional prison time for the probation violations.
