Iowa Republicans have begun disparaging Democratic candidate for governor Rob Sand, warning that his election would unravel their achievements.
The Des Moines Register reports Iowa GOP Chair Jeff Kaufmann said at a party fundraiser last week that state Auditor Sand, who is viewed as the Democratic frontrunner, may post about bow-hunting or other activities that broaden his appeal. But Kaufmann insisted Republican voters shouldn’t be fooled by Sand’s social media persona.
Kaufman said, “He will unravel everything. Do not, do not be drug in by his hypocritical social media crap.”
Sand is Iowa’s highest-ranking elected Democrat, having served two terms as state auditor. Reports say Sand has more than $8 million in campaign funds, although Kaufman claims most of that comes from Sand’s wife and in-laws.
Sand’s campaign communications director Emma O’Brien said the attacks are due to state insiders being afraid they’re losing their grip on power and distracting voters from policies that put Iowa at or near the bottom in economic growth, personal income growth, and cancer growth.
