A University of Iowa professor is defending himself against accusations that he spent nearly $300,000 in grants and other funding that violated school spending rules.

Dr. Calvin Carter has been on paid administrative leave since October 2023, when the investigation was first launched.  According to a report by Iowa state auditor Rob Sand, the UI requested a special investigation due to concerns that Carter was using funds for his personal business, Geminii, Inc., and not for UI research.

The investigation identified money spent on the purchase and care for pigs being held in Indiana, although the UI says Carter’s research only had approval to use mice. Sand’s report includes other examples of allegedly misspent money as well.

Carter’s lawyer has now issued a statement saying a news story on the situation disseminated by KCRG TV-9 and picked up by other outlets was misleading. The letter notes none of Sand’s allegations are examples of actual wrongdoing, and instead point out inconsistencies in UI guidelines that could easily lead to confusion. It adds that UI officials did a poor job of communicating their policies to Carter.

Carter has issued a statement saying the allegations are “deeply hurtful and patently false”, and he is considering legal action.
