A suspect accused of stealing a shopping cart is now also accused of assaulting Iowa City Police.
Officers observed 31-year-old Dashen Jones of the Town & Campus Apartment on Arthur Street pushing a Hy-Vee shopping cart down the sidewalk in front of Memory Gardens on Muscatine Avenue just before 10:15 Friday night. When interviewed, Jones was reportedly uncooperative. He allegedly hit an officer who was trying to take him into custody.
Hy-Vee staff later confirmed Jones had stolen the cart. He’s now charged with 5th Degree Theft, Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, and Interference With Official Acts. If convicted on all counts, he faces a maximum of 26 months in jail.
