An Iowa City woman was charged with falsifying a bill of sale when applying for a title to a recently-purchased vehicle.
The arrest report states 44-year-old Jody Phillips of the Iowa River Mobile Home Community on South Riverside Drive fraudulently applied for a title for a 2003 Ford Escort at the Treasurer’s Office on June 3rd.
An investigation into the matter determined that Phillips purchased the vehicle for $500 from an individual on May 16th. However, when Phillips went to title the vehicle, she allegedly presented a false bill of sale showing the purchase price at just $1, the date of sale March 26th, and the forged signature of the seller.
Phillips was charged with Fraudulent Practice 4th degree, and could face up to a year in jail if convicted.
