West Liberty Police are warning residents about a scam in which the perpetrators pretend to be from the electric company.
Police say the scammers are asking questions about the intended target’s power bill. They may claim the electric bill is past due and threaten to shut off the power immediately unless the intended victim makes a payment.
The scams have been attempted via phone calls, text messages, and email. The scammer often demands payment through prepaid cards, gift cards, or wire transfers. They may also ask for personal information such as Social Security numbers or banking details.
West Liberty Police say anyone receiving such a call, text, or email should hang up or delete the message before giving out any personal information, then report the scam to local law enforcement.
