Iowa City Police investigate shots fired near Sycamore Mall

At 6:20 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 11, 2025, the Iowa City Police Department was called to the area behind Sycamore Mall (Iowa City Marketplace), 1660 Sycamore St., for a report of shots fired.

Responding officers located evidence of shots fired. In the subsequent investigation, a firearm was recovered. As a result of the investigation, a juvenile male was detained and faces the following charges:

  • Intimidation with a dangerous weapon
  • Going armed with intent
  • Assault while displaying a dangerous weapon
  • Minor in possession of a firearm
  • Use of a dangerous weapon in commission of a crime

The juvenile was transported to the Linn County Juvenile Detention Center.

This investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible.
