A local advocacy group is holding a press conference in Muscatine this morning, demanding the release of an immigrant from the county jail.
Escucha Mi Vos says on June 21st, Muscatine resident Jesus Hernandez was shot when two alleged assailants attempted to steal his car as he was driving to his construction job. They claim that instead of receiving protection as a victim and key witness, he has been jailed on a “material witness” hold, and County Attorney Jim Barry is refusing to sign Hernandez’ U visa certification.
The U visa is a federal protection for victims of certain crimes who cooperate with law enforcement. It requires a law-enforcement certification confirming the victim’s helpfulness. In return, victims receive protection from deportation and a path to lawful status, ensuring they can remain in the U.S. to testify and help hold perpetrators accountable.
The press conference will be held at 10:30 at the Muscatine County Courthouse and will feature remarks from Hernandez’ attorney and sister, representatives of Escucha Mi Vos and local faith and community leaders.
