The Iowa City City Council has unanimously passed a resolution supporting the rights of all LBGTQ+ residents.
The resolution, passed Tuesday night, states that all members of the LGBTQ+ community shall enjoy equal protection under the law. That includes city-sanctioned protection against discrimination by other people, businesses or the government when it comes to employment, housing, and education.
The move from the city council came as a response to the Iowa legislature passing Senate File 311 earlier this year. The new law removes gender identity as a protected class under Iowa law.
In other business, the council voted to disband the community police review board, as required by another recently-passed law in the Iowa legislature.
