An area transient faces jail time after she allegedly stole from a Shelter House resident.
Police say the evening of August 1st, 52-year-old Melissa Zanders was seen on camera taking the victim’s bag from where he was lying and placing it between her and another suspect. Zanders reportedly took items from the bag and put them in her pants pocket.
A check of Zanders’ criminal history shows multiple theft convictions, the most recent being out of Iowa City on December 12th of last year. She is charged with 3rd degree Theft, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in jail if convicted.
