A Coralville woman reportedly tried to vomit to get out of an OWI charge.

22-year-old Isabella Hernandez of East 7th Street was pulled over on West Burlington Street in Iowa City for traffic violations at approximately 1:45am Sunday.  She was allegedly wearing bar wristbands and exhibiting signs of impairment. When an investigation began, the officer observed that Hernandez had removed her wristbands. She reportedly had bloodshot watery eyes, slow slurred speech, and a strong odor of ingested alcohol.

After showing signs of intoxication on field tests, Hernandez agreed to a PBT showing her over the legal limit to drive.  She was transported back to the Iowa City Police Department, where she allegedly began chugging water and asking about vomiting.  The officer explained that wouldn’t help her metabolize alcohol any faster, but Hernandez reportedly said she still had to try. A short time later, she allegedly put her fingers down her throat and tried to force herself to vomit.

Hernandez eventually agreed to a Datamaster test, showing her breath-alcohol level at .105 percent.  She was charged with OWI first offense, a serious misdemeanor.
