A University of Iowa student who could have been let off with an underage violation instead got himself arrested and faces jail time.
The 20-year-old from Chicago was among those whose IDs were checked at DC’s on South Dubuque Street at 12:20am Wednesday. He reportedly exited the bar and police suspected him to be underage and intoxicated. They report the male student had bloodshot watery eyes, unsteady balance, slurred speech, and the odor of ingested alcohol. When asked for an ID, he provided a fictitious Illinois ID and his actual ID. He was placed inside a squad car and cited for being in a bar after 10pm while underage.
The student allegedly refused to sign the citation despite repeated pleas to do so. It was explained to him that he would be free to leave once he signed the citation, and his refusal would lead to his arrest. Once told he would be taken into custody, the man reportedly tensed his arms and refused to exit the squad car. He had to be physically pulled out of the vehicle.
A search incident to arrest allegedly discovered two fictitious Illinois IDs along with a container in his pocket that contained an Adderall pill.
The student was charged with Possession of Controlled Substance 1st Offense, Possession of Fake ID, Interference with Official Acts, and Public Intoxication. If convicted on all counts, he faces a maximum jail sentence of 26 months. He also faces a fine of $400 for the bar violation, including court costs.
