Developers want to take the land that includes the former Roosevelt Elementary School and turn it into an affordable housing complex.
The Daily Iowan reports TWG Development purchased the land on the 600 block of Greenwood Drive from the Iowa City Community School District in 2021 for $1.25 mllion. Cost increases related to the COVID-19 pandemic and changes to the scope of the project delayed bringing the proposal to the Iowa City Planning and Zoning Commission.
The Commission unanimously approved the updated comprehensive site plan and the rezoning request.
The proposed 187-unit development will range in size from one to three bedrooms. An interior courtyard and dog park are also planned, with a possible fitness center.
A public hearing on the rezoning request and comprehensive plan is scheduled for this Tuesday’s City Council meeting. The council will have to approve three readings of the proposal.
TWG Development is working with Iowa City-based MMS Consultants Inc., to pursue federal low-income housing tax credits for the project. A construction timeline has yet to be set.
